Flowers are one of the most important items to tick off your wedding checklist. The style and tone of your wedding is determined by that wonderful bouquet you carry in your hand down the aisle, to the fabulous centrepieces at your venue.
Colours, scents and types of flowers all tell their own story about you, complementing your dress and your setting, but also your personal preferences.
After many years of experience in the industry, here are 5 essential wedding flower tips from Judi Roche, owner of Balla Florists…
1: Your Budget:
Being realistic is very important. There are flowers out there for every budget. It’s best to Be honest & realistic – Chat to your florist and then set your budget for your florals and stick to it. If you like your florist’s ideas and Work Portfolio, then your decision is an easy one. Their reputation and experience should speak for themselves. Choosing your wedding flowers is not meant to be stressful. If you have an idea of your starting budget, let your florist know and they will work with you to realise your dream.
2: Timing:
Have you decided on your Big Day date? Many Brides come to me and are overjoyed about their wedding flowers – you adore the peony rose but you have provisionally booked your wedding date in winter! Peonies are in season for a few short weeks in the summer. If you have a favourite flower check it’s seasonality – if you want them included in your Wedding Flowers, your wedding date needs to fall within their availability time frame. It will save the disappointment later. Also, peak dates such as New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day come with a bigger price tag due to demand. Christmas weddings are lovely, but remember the Dutch Flower Markets do close for 2 to 3 days around Christmas, so your florist may be under pressure to hold flowers over a few days for you. Some Brides are happy to trust their florist to do this, and some may not.
3: Colours:
Flowers come in many beautiful shades. To match up your colour scheme you need to think about tones & shades of your desired colour scheme so it can be complementary to your style and theme. Just because flowers come in many shades they may not come in all those varieties, so choosing a colour scheme may not be as simple as you think. If you have an unusual shade, I always ask for a swatch of dress colours so I have an exact idea of your colour scheme. Sometimes I suggest opposing colours to realise the best result. Remember, flower colours are not always the same as your dress colour and can photograph differently in certain light. An experienced florist will guide you.
4: Re-using Your florals
In choosing your flowers, it is always ideal when your florist has working knowledge of the church and reception. You could consider re-using some of your floral pieces from the church and moving them onto the reception. You can place your altar piece on top table and fresh flower pew ends in decorated jars on guests’ tables. You can place your bouquet and bridesmaids’ bouquets in pre-filled water vases to display on your top table later on and thus, keeping them fresh in the process. These will create great impact around the hotel and save on costs also
5: Prioritise:
I always advise my couples that “YOU & The Groom” are most important. Choose the main floral items most important to you. I usually advise the areas where your guests will be spending the most time to appreciate them and of course where you and your groom will be most photographed. If any of the guests require extra flowers such as buttonholes etc., ask them to call your florist separately. This way you stick to your budget and avoid unnecessary stress on the day.
