A look at some of the most influential wedding gowns of the last century…

1. Elizabeth Taylor

Dame Elizabeth Taylor was almost as famous for her many marriages as she was for her acting skills. “I am a very committed wife,” Taylor once joked. “And I should be committed too—for being married so many times.” Taylor took her first trip down the aisle in 1950, marrying hotel heir Conrad “Nicky” Hilton in a Hollywood ceremony. Her silk, basque-waisted gown was a gift from her studio, MGM.

4. Grace Kelly

Hollywood actress Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III of Monaco in a dazzling ceremony in 1956. MGM costume designer Helen Rose, who had won two academy awards for her work, was asked to design the royal gown. The dress consisted of a bell shaped skirt made from taffeta with a beautiful embroidered lace bodice, a high neckline, long sleeves and a graceful train. MGM decided to shun a tiara in favour of a beaded juliet cap. This classic dress is said to have been the inspiration for The Duchess of Cambridge’s own wedding gown.
